THE 2019 B ordeaux RELEASE T he much anticipated release of the 2019 Bordeaux has something for every palate, from the serious collector to the curious beginner. On November 19, 2022 BCLIQUOR will release the 2019 Bordeaux around the province. This is the first time we will have access to the most famous châteaux from this vintage and collectors will line up to purchase Pétrus, Angélus, Lafite Rothschild and Margaux from the early hours in the morning. Wine lovers that are just starting their adventures with Bordeaux or who are looking for something that will deliver pure pleasure in a glass will find much to like about the 2019 vintage. The wines have lovely pure fruit and ripe tannins with each region and vineyard leaving its own distinctive mark of terroir. On the Left Bank, the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines from Haut- Médoc and sub-appellations of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux are dense with cassis fruit, sweet herbs and firm structure. Most of these will benefit from some time in the cellar to smooth out the tannins and gain the complex flavours that aging can bring. Wines from the Right Bank can be softer and more approachable in youth, particularly those from appellations like Fronsac where some of the best value wines are sourced. BCLIQUOR is offering two favourites this year: Château de la Dauphine and Château la Vieille Cure. Wines from St-Émilion can be silky with flavours that include dark plum, wild flowers and spice. We have a range of wines from early drinking beauties like Château Rol Valentin to elegant classics like Château Fourtet. Power and lusciousness balanced by finesse is the hallmark of a great wine from the Pomerol region and we are lucky to be able

to offer some of the greats like La Fleur-Pétrus, Trotanoy and Vieux Château Certan. Those connoisseurs on the inside track will be looking for the gorgeous Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon white Bordeaux. There is always a small, but well-chosen selection of racy whites ranging from those that are ready to drink with fresh seafood tonight, such as Clos des Lunes Lune d’Argent, and those that will become complex and toasty with 3-5 years in the cellar, such as Château Smith Haut Lafitte. Even rarer than the whites of Bordeaux are the exciting sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac. These wines are incredibly complex with dense flavours of tropical fruit, ripe citrus and exotic herbs. Châteaux Doisy Daëne and Doisy-Védrines are both excellent examples. Drink them with something savoury like aged cheese. BORDEAUX 101 Vertical Tasting One of the fascinating things about Bordeaux wine is the variation between vintages. Warm weather vintages will often yield rich, full-bodied and fruit-driven wines, while cooler vintages will often result in more earthy, dried herbal and savoury wines. Conducting a vertical tasting consists of getting together a number of different vintages of the same wine and comparing them. Being able to create vertical tastings is one of the benefits of having a cellar and buying the same wines every vintage. Taste blind and see if you can taste the difference in warmer versus cooler years. Storing Bordeaux Wine Many Bordeaux wines are known for their ability to age, so it is important that they are stored correctly. The key element of storage is to have a cool, constant temperature, ideally around 13-14°C (55-57°F). The constant part is more important than the exact temperature. This allows a wine to age gracefully, developing all of the complex flavours and aromas you would come to expect. The wine should be kept away from bright light that may heat the wine or fade the labels. Anything sealed with a cork should be on its side to keep the cork from drying out. You may be lucky enough to have a cool basement with ideal cellaring conditions or you may choose to purchase a wine cooler that
controls temperature and humidity. Great Pairings with Bordeaux
While the vast majority of Bordeaux wine is dry red, there are some high quality dry white and sweet botrytis-affected dessert wines, such as Sauternes, that are also produced. Red Bordeaux : These wines have structure and power and are best paired with robust red meats. Classic pairings are roast or grilled beef or roast leg of lamb. Wines that have some age pair well with roast game birds or duck. White Bordeaux : Often partially oak-aged and rich, yet still lively and refreshing, these wines are best paired with rich white fish, lobster or roast chicken stuffed with lemons. Sauternes : Rich and sweet, these wines pair beautifully with peach-, pear- or apple-based desserts, crème brûlée and foie gras. Try with blue cheese for a savoury option.

Decanting There are two main reasons for decanting wine. The first is to remove any sediment that has formed during the ageing process. The second is to aerate a young wine to hopefully soften up some of its rough edges, making it taste smoother and smell more aromatic. To aerate a young wine, simply pour the bottle into a decanter, not worrying if it splashes in and gets plenty of air. To remove sediment, a bottle should first sit upright for around 24 hours to let any sediment gently settle to the bottom. Carefully open the bottle without disturbing the sediment. Pour the wine slowly and steadily into the decanter, watching the shoulder of the bottle and stopping when you see sediment appearing or when the wine looks cloudy. Old corks can often crumble in which case you can use a filter to catch any pieces of cork. A candle or flashlight shining on the shoulder of the bottle makes it easier to see the sediment. A general rule is that the older and more delicate the wine, the shorter the time should be between decanting and serving as older wines can lose their freshness quickly. Left Bank or Right Bank? Bordeaux is situated around the Gironde estuary and its two rivers the Dordogne and Garonne. The area west of the Gironde and Garonne is known as the Left Bank while the Right Bank is the name used for the vineyards located on the north and east side of Gironde and the Dordogne. In between the two rivers is the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation. The Left Bank is where Cabernet Sauvignon is usually the dominant variety in the red blends and is the home of the famous appellations of the Médoc such as St‑Estèphe, Pauillac, St‑Julien and Margaux as well as those further south – Pessac‑Léognan and Graves. The Right Bank châteaux are generally smaller and the climate and soils are more suited to Merlot and Cabernet Franc rather than Cabernet Sauvignon. Château d’Aiguilhe, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux “A terrific effort from this large and immaculately maintained property on the clay-limestone slopes of the Côtes de Castillon, the 2019 d'Aiguilhe exhibits aromas of cherries and cassis mingled with notions of burning embers, licorice and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a mineral finish, it's intelligently matured in tank and large-format oak as well as small barriques. Château Angélus, St‑Émilion Grand Cru (L) “Based on a final blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Angélus is knockout stuff, and while I'm not sure it matches the perfect 2018, it's not far off. Gorgeous notes of redcurrants, blueberries, sandalwood, dried flowers, vanilla, and forest floor are just some of its nuances, and it hits the palate with medium to full body, a perfectly balanced, seamless mouthfeel, beautifully ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. Château d'Armailhac, Pauillac (L) “Based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2019 Château D'Armailhac showed beautifully from barrel two years ago, and it doesn’t disappoint now from bottle. Giving up plenty of ripe black cherry, mulberries, and cassis-like fruit as well as textbook Pauillac lead pencil, forest floor, and tobacco, it's medium to full-bodied, has good mid-palate density, subtle background oak, ripe yet building tannins, and a great finish. It shows the vintage's more elegant, classic style yet doesn't lack for concentration or length. It's going to benefit from just 3-4 years of bottle age and drink fabulously well for two decades. Compared with its neighbors, Beau-Sejour-Becot is dark, broad and broodingly tannic, sometimes more power than finesse. There is plenty of character, though. That much is evident. 6. Château Beauregard, Pomerol “From an estate that appears to be on an upward trajectory, the 2019 Château Beauregard is a textbook 2019 with its pure, elegant, seamless style. Black cherries, darker currants, leafy herbs, and floral notes all emerge on the nose, and its wonderfully textured, medium to full-bodied, has gorgeous tannins, and a great finish. It's up with the 2018 and certainly one of the finest vintages I've tasted from this address. It will drink well for 15-20 years. Best after 2022.” 94 pts, Jeb Dunnuck 390886 $160 7. Château Bel-Air Jean & Gabriel, Lussac-Saint-Émilion “The 2019 Bel-Air Jean & Gabriel is impeccable. Soft, creamy and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2019 is especially fine for Lussac, where the wines are rarely this polished. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice and dark spice build over time. Château Bélair-Monange, St‑Émilion Grand Cru (L) “One of the standouts in 2019. Red fruit aromatics are so clear on the nose, strawberries and sweet red cherries with some bramble floral notes - delicate and lifted. Gorgeous expression on the palate, so finely framed with tannins that are smooth and supple, effortlessly coating the mouth and giving life to the bright cherry and raspberry fruit. This has grace - slender and smooth - the flavours just glide across the palate, filling out the mouth with lashings of limestone terroir markers - crystalline fruit purity, crushed stones, mint and minerality. 9. Château Belle-Vue, Haut-Médoc “This fresher style of wine offers layers of black-currant acidity. They go with the ageworthy tannins to promise richness as the wine matures. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite juicy at first, yet the structure defines the finish. It will need 4-5 years in the cellar, but there is good potential here. Château Beychevelle, St‑Julien (L) “Coming in close to equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with just a splash of Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Beychevelle shows a classic Saint-Julien purity and finesse-driven style as well as notes of red and blue fruits, sappy flowers, tobacco, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, I love its overall balance and purity of fruit, it has silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. 13. Château Brown, Pessac‑Léognan “This ripe, smoky wine offers attractive red-berry fruits and layers of fine tannins. It is structured, with a dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Château Calon Ségur, St-Estèphe (L) “The 2019 Calon Ségur is a wine of soaring vertical intensity and pure power. That's the good news. The not so good news is that it wont be ready to drink any time soon. Exotic spice, pencil shavings, crime de cassis, mocha and licorice are some of the nuances that develop in the glass, but those descriptions cant even begin to capture the sheer beauty of what is in the glass. Château Canon, St‑Émilion Grand Cru “The 2019 Château Canon is another brilliant wine from this talented team that delivers everything you could want from this incredible terroir located on the upper limestone plateau. Based on 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc, it has a pure, incredibly refined, yet still powerful profile that takes time to unwind. Offering up beautiful notes of black raspberries, wild strawberries, spring flowers, chalky minerality, and graphite, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, multi- dimensional mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a finish that's something to behold. This isn't the massive style of the 2015 and reminds me slightly of the 2016. It's perfectly balanced and, again, the purity and finesse are off the charts. Château Canon la Gaffelière, St‑Émilion Grand Cru (L) “The 2019 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière is another brilliantly perfumed wine in the vintage that shines for its complexity, finesse, and nuances. Giving up awesome notes of red and black currants, tobacco, exotic flowers, cedarwood, and loamy earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautifully polished, integrated tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. “The 2019 Château de Camensac is one of the best produced at the estate. Still a little bashful on the nose, it unfolds to offer black fruit, Early Grey tea and tobacco, all beautifully defined and focused. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and quite linear, yet full of vigor, leading to a spicier finish than was suggested out of barrel. Bon vin! 22. Château Carbonnieux, Pessac‑Léognan
“The 2019 Château Carbonnieux sports a deep purple/ruby hue to go with a brilliant nose of red and black currants, spring flowers, spicy oak, and hints of tobacco. It's beautiful on the palate as well and is medium to full-bodied, has a seamless, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's the finest wine I've tasted from this estate. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all brought up in 40% new barrels. A wine you just want to drink now as it's so appealing with freshness and lift but it has the sides of spice that give it structure and make you realise it's still powerful and will age so well. 25. Château de Chantegrive, Graves “The 2019 Chantegrive has turned out well, exhibiting aromas of sweet berries, cherries and plums mingled with notions of loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, charming and lively, with powdery tannins and a nicely balanced profile, it's an attractive, understated Graves that will flesh out with a few years in bottle. 28. Château Chasse-Spleen, Moulis-en-Médoc
“The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is very perfumed on the nose, offering vivid brambly red fruit, leather, undergrowth and cedar aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and cohesive, with a sappy opening and fine acidity. Lightly spiced, showing plenty of substance on the finish. While not the most consistent estate, Chasse-Spleen has it in its grasp to make great wines, and the 2019 is one of them. Drinking Window: $85 29. Chevalier de Lascombes, Margaux “The 2019 Chevalier de Lascombes is a rich, heady wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. 31. Château Clerc Milon, Pauillac (L) “The 2019 Clerc Milon is a real success. At more than 70%, this blend contains one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon in the property's recent history, and the result is a wine of real nobility. Offering up aromas of violets, wild berries, licorice, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with notable depth at the core, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish. From clay-limestone soils rather than the sandy gravels that characterize d'Armailhac, this is by some margin the more structured and serious of Mouton-Rothschild's two Pauillac stablemates. Drink

“The 2019 Clos de Boüard has a more tempered nose compared to the showing from barrel, delivering copious yet controlled black cherry and blueberry scents, and turning quite floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity, a smooth texture and a satisfying, quite persistent, graphite-tinged finish. It shows the more tight, compact style of the vintage, yet the purity is spot on, it has good concentration, and it’s just a brilliant wine.
