104. Château La Serre, St-Émilion Grand Cru
“The 2020 La Serre is a brooding, potent Saint-Émilion. Blackberry jam, cloves, licorice, leather, incense, tobacco and gravel add to an impression of gravitas and virile intensity that builds as it opens gradually in the glass. There’s real weight and substance here. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2035.” 92 pts, Vinous 371688 $120 105. La Sirène de Giscours, Margaux “The 2020 La Sirène de Giscours is a gorgeous second wine. Bright and deep, with tons of drive the 2020 is seriously impressive. Dark cherry, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and dark spice build effortlessly, driven by bright acids and tons of nervous energy. The balance here is simply impeccable. Drinking Window: 2024 - 2030.” 93 pts, Vinous 465843 $70 106. Château Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc “One of the best Haut-Médocs out there, and a wine that competes with any number of classified growths, the 2019 Château Sociando-Mallet is ruby/plum-hued and has a great nose of ripe red and black currants, spice, smoked tobacco, and loamy earth. It shows the more expressive, open, seamless style of the 2019 vintage and is medium to full-bodied, has beautifully polished tannins, and just about perfect balance.” 94 pts, Jeb Dunnuck 357660, 362833 $80 107. Château Talbot, St-Julien “The 2020 Talbot is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel. Strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections open first in the bouquet, leading into a rich palate laced with expressive dark cherry and plum fruit. A Saint-Julien of power and stature, Talbot is fabulous in 2020. I love the breadth and overall intensity here, but there is just as much focus to keep things in balance. The 2020 is superb, certainly the best in recent memory. Drinking Window: 2030 - 2050.” 95 pts, Vinous 457471 $150
