149. Château Pierre, St-Émilion Grand Cru

“Exhibiting aromas of ripe berries, sweet spices, loamy soil and truffle, the 2021 Pierre 1er is a medium to full-bodied, lively wine built around powdery tannins. It’s a creditable but not especially concentrated wine.” 87-88 pts, Wine Advocate 412382 $45 150. Château Plince, Pomerol “The 2021 Plince has much more fruit concentration on the nose than the Plincette, delivering black cherries, cassis and violet aromas. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is clean and fresh on the entry, offering quite robust tannins that dominate the midpalate, and good density, even if it lacks some grace and finesse on the herbaceous finish. Just a bit gawky.” Drink 2027 - 2038 87-89 pts, Vinous 435722 $80 151. Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac “Pure berry fruit and cedar aromas, the wine has great purity. It is a straight line of freshness as well as black-currant fruits and ripe acidity. The wine is beautifully textured and firm at its core. Drink from 2028. Organic and biodynamic.” 97 pts, Wine Enthusiast 434165 $290 152. Château Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Médoc “Nice fragrance on the nose, perfumed and vibrant with red and black fruits. Smooth and round, but straight too, nice definition, a shot of bright acidity with slightly tangy black berry fruit, mineral sides and just gripping salty, stony tannins. Good balance and weight on the palate, not light or too austere, but mouthwatering with character and length. Not shouting but quite complete.” Drink 2024 - 2033 91 pts, Decanter 450513 $70
