130. Château Les Ormes de Pez, St‑Estèphe
“Sweet strawberry, orange, grapefruit, plums and blackcurrants, but the sweet jammy kind. This is fruit forward and expressive out the gate, round and so appealing. Spiced aspects from the Petit Verdot with a sturdy backbone in terms of structure and frame. Tannins are more on the austere side, fine and detailed, extremely mouthfilling but you can almost taste each one with the minerality coming through strongly leaving that clean wet stone taste in the mouth. Ripe and juicy dark fruit also. This is medium bodied with lots of precision in terms of detail. Lovely potential here. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend.” Drink 2024 - 2040 91 pts, Decanter 450104 $65 131. Pagodes de Cos, St‑Estèphe “Aromatic blackberry fruits go along with black-spice scents. The wine’s richness is lifted by great acidity to partner the blackberry flavors. Drink this structured second-label wine from 2026.” 93 pts, Wine Enthusiast 441092 $95 132. Château Palmer, Margaux “A showstopper of a wine that offers a fragranced nose of purple flowers, blackcurrant, cola and liquorice. Smooth and silky, this has a gorgeous weight and texture, full and filling, a density of chalky, almost chewy tannins but bright, juicy acidity. Excellent construction, delicately layered but builds to an impressive whole that has such allure on the palate. A joyous wine brilliantly delivered.” Drink 2027 - 2050 97 pts, Decanter 435889 $800 133. Château Pape Clément, Pessac‑Léognan (L) “This legendary estate, created by Pope Clément V, who was from the Bordeaux region, has produced a fine, densely textured wine. Its ripe tannins are typical of this estate, laced in this vintage by acidity and black-currant fruits. Drink from 2027.” 95 pts, Wine Enthusiast 412401 6 bottle limit $225
