51. Croix de Beauséjour, St-Émilion Grand Cru “Second wines, like the Croix de Beauséjour can offer a glimpse into the style of the Grand Vin but offer pleasure earlier. Look for dark berry fruits, oregano aromas and fine tannins.” 91 pts, Barbara Philip MW 450712 $80 52. La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou, St‑Julien “Ripe cedar aromas and black-pepper spice give this single-vineyard wine a fragrant character. It is full, rich and structured with solid tannins that contrast with the juicy undertow of black-currant flavors. Drink from 2028.” 94 pts, Wine Enthusiast 440928 $120 53. Château Croizet Bages, Pauillac “Quite a toasted nose, full of liquorice, cedar and tobacco nuances. Structured and full for the vintage, quite a serious take with not as much acidity shining through as some. Here the tannins take the fore as well as the mineral, salty, liquorice edges giving this more of a savoury ending with a feeling of licking wet stones. Maybe in time this will open and soften a little more.” Drink 2025 - 2045 91 pts, Decanter 411898 $75 54. Château Dalem, Fronsac “A strong effort, the 2021 Dalem exhibits aromas of sweet berries, plums and petals framed by nicely integrated new oak, followed by a medium-bodied, lively palate that’s pretty and charming in profile. This is a fine effort from this Fronsac estate.” 88-89 pts, Wine Advocate 425523 $55 55. La Dame de Montrose, St‑Estèphe “The 2021 La Dame de Montrose is a worthy counterpoint to the grand vin, shedding a touch of youthful reduction in the glass to reveal aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with exotic spices, orange zest and petals. Medium to full-bodied, suave and sensual, it’s layered and complete, with a lively, charming profile.” Drink 2025 - 2040 90 pts, Wine Advocate 450151 $90
